First Page Ideas for Your Journal

There’s nothing quite like the magic feeling of starting a fresh new journal. Sometimes the first blank page can feel intimidating. The secret? Just start. Here are a few creative ideas for filling that very first pages of your new journal (digital or paper) and setting the tone for everything that comes next.

This Journal Belongs To & Before I Start Letter

1. This Journal Belongs To…

The classic starter page! Write your name, the date you began, and maybe even paste in a photo or doodle. Think of this as your title page - the place that sets the mood for the whole journal. You could even give your journal a name if you want it to feel extra personal.

2. "Before I Start" Letter

Try writing a letter to yourself about your intentions for this journal - what you want to explore, capture, or create in its pages. One idea is to write it from the perspective of the journal itself, welcoming you as its author. Keep it open on the page, or slip it into an envelope taped to the first spread for a hidden-letter feel.

About The Author

3. About The Author

Introduce yourself to your own journal! Document who you are right now by making a little “about me” spread. Include your age, current favourites (books, songs, hobbies, foods), or even a doodled self-portrait. This page becomes such a fun time capsule to look back on.

Vision Board & Ins and Outs

4. Vision Board Spread

Fill your first page with images and words that capture your goals for the year ahead. I like to use pinterest to curate my images. You could also cut out images from magazines or draw. This works beautifully in both physical and digital journals.

5. Ins & Outs List

I love this way to mark a new era of my life: make a list of what’s in for you and what’s out. Think about habits, hobbies, and mindsets. Maybe “morning walks” are in and “late-night scrolling” is out. It’s simple, creative, and a great reminder to check in on throughout your journal.

Starting a new journal doesn’t need to feel daunting. Use your first page to set the mood — whether that’s documenting who you are today, writing a heartfelt letter, or simply pasting down a collage of your favourite colours. The most important part is that it feels personal and fun.

And if you’d like a little extra inspiration, my digital journal template is perfect for creating beautiful, layered first pages — without worrying about blank-page fear.
